The delivery man was returning to his Jeep when Reilly says multiple assailants fired at him at 6:15 p.m. Sunday in what the department is investigating as a carjacking and attempted robbery.
The man was shot in the chest, back and torso and remains in critical condition Tuesday. (Per the department’s policy, victims' names are not released unless they succumb to their injuries, according to Reilly.)
Phyllis Kelly, who had ordered the groceries Sunday, had just gone back inside her home when the gunmen began firing, shetold WPVI, adding that she was “in shock and anger” about the shooting. “Maybe if I would have stayed there another minute, maybe they would have went away,” she told the outlet. “Maybe the driver would have been okay.”

So far this year, 1,492 people have been shot in the city – a 27 percent decrease from last year, according to the most recent data fromThe Philadelphia Center for Gun Violence Reporting, which collects data on every shooting in the city. Twenty-three people had been shot within the first six days of November, two of them fatally, according to the center.
The potential motive of Sunday night’s shooting is not immediately clear, Reilly says, and the Jeep has not been recovered.
The department, which Reilly says is “really early in the investigation” and operating on limited information, is investigating the case under multiple potential theories including the idea that the delivery man was targeted for his Jeep or even followed to the Philadelphia home where he made the delivery.
While canvassing the area, police recovered one firearm and multiple spent shell casings.
As of early Tuesday, police had made no arrests.
