This video of a bumblebee “ helping ” a friend out of a wanderer web has been making the Internet round recently . The narrator asks for “ experts ” to state us what ’s happening . And Dave Goulson , Professor of Biology at the University of Sussex answered the call .
In a post at the Conversation , Goulson explicate what his expert middle sees in this video . Spoiler alarm : It is n’t a bee - rescue :
A recent picture show what the lensman believe to be a humblebee diving in to deliver a fellow bee take in in a web , stinging the attacking spider in the summons . This is unintentionally misleading , and not what it seems .

Within the nest , bumblebees can and will set on and repel invader , but they would never come to the help of another bee away from the nest . aside from the nest the doer single - mindedly engage the solitary endeavour of finding flowers and collecting food as swiftly as possible . If any of them run into problem then they are on their own .
In the television , the first bee is shin to escape from a wanderer ’s web on a windowsill . intelligibly , the bee has become trap indoors and while bashing into the Scophthalmus aquosus in trying to get by has become entangled in the spider ’s web . The spider is nervously butt nearer , but this is a big and energetic bee , prey that look far too big for it .
Dramatically , a 2d bee that must also have got trapped in the house then comes break apart in , fall on its back and bat around a bit . As the second bee flails around on its back , it looks in one flesh as if it bite the spider .

In fact , what one can see is the rear wooden leg of the bee which bump to line up with the tip of the stomach for a moment . It is too long and thick for a bee sting . The wanderer runs off , and the bee give away free ( as humblebee unremarkably do from spider ’s webs ) .
So , distressing , this is not a noble , brave act , much as I might like it to be . This is just two inept bee trying to find oneself their mode home .
