Randall Munroe has really outdone himself with today ’s xkcd . The infographic show when a certain story was print and then compare that day of the month to the length of clip — either in the future or preceding — to when the story actually took or will take place .
To understand this chart , called “ Stories of the Past and Future , ” you have to part the top serving — “ years set in the future ” — with the bottom portion — “ years set up in the past tense ” . Each of these plane section is in turn divided into two related subsection .
A radio link to a much larger reading can be found by clickinghere .

In the “ future ” section , the chart divide stories according to whether they ’re either “ disused ” or “ still possible . ” A story is obsolete if we ’ve already pass on the timeline in which the story take spot . The classical example is Terminator 2 , which predicted that Skynet would come online on August 29 , 1997 . As the chart shows , we ’re now 18 years ahead of that timeline , while the movie itself come out in 1990 , seven years prior to the film ’s predicted date . Star Trek , by demarcation , has yet to pass off .
The “ retiring ” section is a bit unlike . The line represent the limit in which the publishing time is good to the time it takes stead than to the nowadays . Or as Munroe puts it , the dividing furrow indicates “ stories written x yr ago and set 2x years ago . ”
For example , as of today , we are further from the publication date of the film The Bridge on the River Kwai ( issue in 1957 , for a difference of 58 year ) than to the length of time the motion picture is distanced from the issue in the story ( which occurred sometime around 1942 to 1943 , for a distance of 14 years ) . Items in Zane Grey are “ stories set in the past tense , but produce long enough ago that they were bring out closer to their setting than to today . ” Consequently , “ modern audiences may not realise which parts were supposed to sound old . ”

catch it ? If not , this pagecan help , and it also includes more info about the works list in the chart .
