A group of astronomers kicked off the first search for signals from alien technology from galaxies beyond our own using a magnanimous radio antenna array in rural Australia .
The SETI Institute , the Berkeley SETI Research Center , and the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research launched the campaign . The collaboration used the Murchison Widefield Array , a 4,096 - transmitting aerial radiocommunication lookout station in Western Australia , to make its observations . The regalia ’s antennae look like squads of metallic element spiders arranged in grids ; though not as grand as some magnanimous radio lookout station dishes , the raiment is well - suited for radio observations of deep space .
The team ’s study , currentlyhostedon the preprint server arXiv , rent advantage of the raiment ’s expectant field of view to scan 2,800 galaxies in a single observation . That distinguishes the late cogitation from previous searches , which have mostly sharpen on radio sources within our Milky Way . star within the whitish Way can range between 4 and 100,000 light - long time out , while nearby wandflower can tramp between 2 million and 30 million light - year away , so the differences in scale are quite profound .

“ One of the main challenges in searching for signs of extraterrestrial intelligence service is the hurrying at which we can observe the sky , ” the team wrote in the paper . “ Even with the declamatory FOV offer by aperture arrays like the MWA , dedicated experiment done on shared - use pawn limit how much of the sky we track and how often we incubate the same sources . ”
According to a SETI Instituterelease , for an extraterrestrial civilization from a unlike galaxy to post a substance that would be detectable on Earth , the civilization ’s technology would call for to be advanced enough to use its master of ceremonies star or several stars as power source . That classification is base on theKardashev scaleof the promotion of intelligent life , which name three al-Qaeda class of civilization and their level of forward motion , as defined by the vigor at their garbage disposal .
The Western Australian array has been used in hunting for extraterrestrial intelligence service ( or SETI ) before ; in 2020 , a sweeping search for alien signaturescame up short . At the risk of exposure of stating the obvious , the late search did not yield any technosignatures , or indications that alien are out using their own tech . But you overlook 100 % of the scene you do n’t take !

The researchers notice that current and planned telescopes are increasing the focal ratio of that lookup . Namely , theVery Large Arrayand theMeerKAT telescopewill both help explore for foreign signals at radio wavelength . I just trust aliens are familiar with received radio communication protocols—”roger , ” “ over , ” and so on . Otherwise we ’ll be stuck in an Airplane - esque routine with alien , when it ’s bad enough with human beings .
