In late month , we ’ve been reminded of stripling intimidation and suicide as a rising trouble in the U.S. For example , I send a Late Movies instalment about theIt Gets Betterproject . But this obviously is n’t a new problem . A supporter recently sent me this clip from the 1990 moviePump Up the Volume , in which Christian Slater ’s character urge on his radio interview ( who are in the main societal outcasts at their shoal ) to disapprove suicide , despite their pain and torture . Okay , good subject matter .

But it ’s a weird pic moment . On the one hand , it is a rousing speech communication , and Slater ’s character make a lot of good degree – specially in the hatchway lines , where he describes the teen ’s place in society . On the other script , he does n’t offer a hardheaded retentive - term solution – his counselling is that destruction sucks worse than lifespan ( with some explicit point ) , reality is subjective , and then he suggests that the only reasonable response to an insane situation is to " go crazy " ( cfRonald David Laing ) . This makes gumption in a movie context where a " wild saltation collage " can watch , but may not be practical advice for actual victims of bullying . In fact , some of what ’s seen in the magazine ( for good example , microwaving a hairdryer and setting the kitchen on flaming ) might get a Kyd institutionalized .

Sample bloodline : " Does n’t this portmanteau word of blindness and blandness make you need to do something crazy ? Then why not do something crazy ? It makes a hell of a lot more sensory faculty than mess up your [ oath ] brains out ! " ( Montage of listeners " hold out crazy " follows . )

Warning : several f - turkey are dropped , to good outcome ; some visuals in the final stage montage are kinda PG-13 / R borderline ( no nudity or violence , just … well , you ’ll see what I imply ) .

What Do You Think?

So . Inspirational message , or not helpful ? Alternate interrogative sentence : what would you tell a teen outcast to help him or her through the torment of high shoal ?
