Even beforeTim Burtontook the conductor ’s chairperson of Batman in 1986 , the movie seemed troubled , if not just instantly unlikely to ever materialize . A Batman movie had been in development since 1980 , following the succeeder of Richard Donner’sSuperman The Movieand Superman II , with various writers – includingcomic writer Steve Englehart – and director ( amongst them , Ghostbusters ’ Ivan Reitman ) attached at different times . It took Burton ’s arrival , following the success of Pee - Wee ’s Big Adventure as well as Frank Miller ’s gamechanging The Dark Knight Returns comic series , to galvanize a coherent direction for the picture show , but even then , it would take another two years – and Burton ’s Beetlejuice becoming a hit – to get the film greenlit by Warner Bros.
If Burton as director was see as a risky move because of resume up until that stage , his throw ofMichael Keatonas the lead theatrical role was take by many to just be outright self-annihilation . It also was n’t just the funny rooter who were scared about the idea of someone known more as a comedic actor taking on the role ( 50,000 letter of complaint were apparently sent to Warner Bros as a result ) , asexecutive producer Jon Peters recalls :
One of the most powerful valet de chambre in Hollywood proceed as far as to call Warners ’ chair Steve Ross and enjoin him casting Michael was such a ugly idea it would bring Warners to its knees … The entire studio apartment would crash . Heaven ’s Gate revisit .

( I have to wonder what the response would have been if Bill Murray , another of the thespian under considerateness for the role alongside more traditional prospect like Mel Gibson , Pierce Brosnan and Kevin Costner , had been cast . )
The casting ofJack Nicholsonas the Joker , however , met with much less wrath ( Other worker considered include Robin Williams , James Woods and , in what could have been either awesome or the worst determination ever , David Bowie ) , even if many – include screenwriter Sam Hamm – disliked the retcon that revealed that Jack Napier , the untested Joker , was the humans that killed Bruce Wayne ’s parent ; that change in the taradiddle come about during shot , when the 1988 WGA Writers Strike prevented Hamm from work on rewrites himself .
( Here’sthe first yield draft of the scriptand , for fun comparison , Hamm ’s original 1986 draught . )

The production was troubled , to say the least . As well as the Writers Strike , the four month shoot – distinguish afterwards by Burton as “ [ t]he bad period of my life ” – also saw manufacturer change the end of the movie without telling Burton , the budget volute out of restraint – it was rumored to cease up more than 50 % high than it was when it set off – and footage steal from the bent , as the press oppose to be the first to have pictures from the closemouthed solidification . Even in the movie ’s pre - release publicity , the stress was clearas this Time Magazine story demonstrates :
As in all megaprojects , the Batman masses were just glad to have live . “ Tim is a pale guy , ” his ally Keaton state . “ Put him in England and add the demand of the shoot , and he becomes transparent . ” But Burton soldier on , and now offers a conservative commendation of his own work : “ throw the scurf , the telephone number of multitude involve and how promptly we did it , it still has a personality , which big movies often lose . It does n’t feel like a cardboard clone . ”
former reviews for the picture were sundry ; while some delight the coloured tone , others felt as if the dark overwhelmed everything else . Roger Ebert , for example :

[ D]id I handle about the relationship between these two caricatures ? Did either one have the depth of even a comic book character ? Not really . And there was something off - putting about the anger beneath the movie ’s violence . This is a hostile , hateful - zippy movie about surly , malefic the great unwashed , and it does n’t bring forth the liberating euphoria of the Superman or Indiana Jones pictures … The movie ’s job is that no one seemed to have any playfulness making it , and it ’s backbreaking to have much fun look out it . It ’s a depressing experience .
Time Magazine ’s take was likewise damning :
Batman ’s style is both daunting and lurching ; it has trouble deciding which of its opposer should ready the tonus . It can be as manic as the Joker , stress to hear the applause of scandal ; it can be as implosive as Batman - Bruce , who seems mash by the burden of his schizoid eminence . This tension nearly run through the viewer and the plastic film .

withal , the film was a runaway succeeder , much moreso than Warners had look for – its curtain raising broke box office records ( It was the first flick to clear more than $ 100 million in its first ten sidereal day ) , and by the oddment of the year , it had become the sixth most successful movie of all clip . The lesson of this account ? Perhaps , to let Tim Burton do whatever he want – unless that happens to be remaking Planet of the Apes .
