Even beforeTim Burtontook the conductor ’s chairperson of Batman in 1986 , the movie seemed troubled , if not just instantly unlikely to ever materialize . A Batman movie had been in development since 1980 , following the succeeder of Richard Donner’sSuperman The Movieand Superman II , with various writers – includingcomic writer Steve Englehart – and director ( amongst them , Ghostbusters ’ Ivan Reitman ) attached at different times . It took Burton ’s arrival , following the success of Pee - Wee ’s Big Adventure as well as Frank Miller ’s gamechanging The Dark Knight Returns comic series , to galvanize a coherent direction for the picture show , but even then , it would take another two years – and Burton ’s Beetlejuice becoming a hit – to get the film greenlit by Warner Bros.

This is a hostile , hateful - zippy movie about surly , malefic the great unwashed , and it does n’t bring forth the liberating euphoria of the Superman or Indiana Jones pictures … The movie ’s job is that no one seemed to have any playfulness making it , and it ’s backbreaking to have much fun look out it . It ’s a depressing experience .
Time Magazine ’s take was likewise damning :
Batman ’s style is both daunting and lurching ; it has trouble deciding which of its opposer should ready the tonus .
