Bill Skarsgård became a revulsion ikon thanks to his portrait of Pennywise in last yr ’s horror hit It , a part he ’ll reprise in the subsequence next year . In between , he ’s get another minatory turn in another Stephen King - inspired tale , Castle Rock . But as the histrion explains , the characters could n’t be more unlike .
“ I was reluctant to [ take another King - root on theatrical role ] in the beginning , because I did n’t get to read the playscript or anything . They just reach out that they were interested in me for a theatrical role , with like a short two - condemnation verbal description , and it was [ set in ] a Stephen King multiverse , ” Skarsgård said at Comic - Con ’s Castle Rock jam room . “ I did n’t know if it was a television translation that would cross paths with It , or Derry , or that reality . I mean , it would n’t , because that was a movie . But I was like , ‘ Is there going to be a TV Pennywise ? ’ I had no idea what the show was . But they kept being haunting , and they finally permit me to read the script .
“ As soon as I learn the pilot , I [ realized ] it was a wholly different humans , an original world , and this character is so different than the graphic symbol I just played . Incredibly different . This character could n’t be further out from Pennywise , who ’s all , like , ‘ Baaaaaa ! ’ And this guy ’s so reserved . As soon as I read the pilot and posture down with [ Creator ] Sam [ Shaw ] and Dusty [ Thomason ] , I was like , this is something really cool and something I really desire to be a part of . ”

Skarsgård ’s mysterious character reference appears ahead of time on inthe first episode of Castle Rock . From what little we cognize so far , “ the Kid”—who just speak , but conduct volumes through his vacuous , preoccupied eyes — has no remembering of his name or how he ended up hoard in a tiny cell in the hero sandwich - basement of Shawshank prison house . His presence helps position Castle Rock ’s overall tone — which is quite dissimilar than the tone of It .
“ This is more creepy than repulsion , peradventure even more mystery than horror . It ’s opine to find sort of malefic . It ’s more of a slow build of unearthly mystery as counterbalance to your traditional horror , ” Skarsgård said . “ It is not a traditional revulsion movie at all , but it ’s more of the jump scare — more of an intense visual ride . [ Castle Rock ] is a more dull - fog human body . ”
You might be surprised to hear that one of the most prominent figures in present-day horror does n’t look at himself to be a diehard repugnance buff , per se . “ I ’ve never sympathise the prayer of feeling really frightened . I know that people do discover it really thrilling . For me , artistically it needs to be worth the effort of me feeling uncomfortable watching it , ” he articulate .

But do n’t worry . Pennywise is n’t a hater . In fact , Skarsgård truly value repugnance , even if he ’s selective about which shuddery movies he puts in his own personal queue . “ It ’s a fun genre . It ’s so originative . The repulsion fan foot is fantastic . It really has devoted fans , and I care that aspect of the genre . The mass who are making it are always really wondrous nerdy , creative people , which I always love . ”
Castle Rock bump off Hulu on July 25 .
