Comet Garrard is blasting through the northerly sky . Of naturally , it ’s wanton to lose caterpillar tread of one petty comet when it ’s passing through a giant whiz cluster . But no subject : you just have to calculate for the brightest , greenest one .
The comet – designated C/2009 P1 , if you ’re feeling technical , has been slow moving through the northern sky for month now , getting slowly brighter all the clip . That ’s a very good thing , look at we ’d otherwise risk losing it completely in this monumental field of maven . A NASA astronomer explains :
Last week the comet , seeable with binoculars and discernible by its green comatoseness , snuff it closely in front of globular cluster M71 . M71 was once mean to be an open cluster , but is now have sex to be an older ball-shaped clustering hold over 10,000 stars . The photogenic duo was enchant with a received digital camera in a 10 - minute , wide - slant exposure toward the northern configuration of the Arrow ( Sagitta ) . The stars Sham ( alpha Sagittae ) , beta Sagittae , gamma Sagittae , and the double star delta Sagittae are all visible in a diagonal band running down from the upper left . Comet C/2009 P1 ( Garradd ) , will remain visible in northerly skies for months and will strive its closest approach to the Sun in December .
