Hello , and welcome to Blogging the Hugos ! It has been some time since we last convoke , and I trust a Federal Reserve note of ( re)introduction may be in parliamentary law . So :

Most recently , Isaac Asimov aficionado Alasdair Wilkins and I completedan epic reviewof all seven of the Good Doctor ’s Foundation books . OK , then ! Now rent ’s talk about Startide Rising .
Three caveat :
First , I register this book and made my bank bill back in late May / early June , right around the meter we were bewilder ready to have a baby , and then actually having the baby , and then trying to observe a buyer for said baby . ( Ultimately , we changed our mind ; this is a horrible thriftiness in which to essay to sell a infant . ) I do not apologize for not writing this post earlier , because as the raw parents among you fuck , there was just no frickin ’ way . Second , I ’ve said it in other posts but will say it again : This novel is part of a series . David Brin wroteSundiverbefore this one , and I have n’t read that ; my understanding is that you do n’t need to , to treasure this one . ( And my overall philosophy about series is that you generally should n’t have to read the other book to appreciate just one of them , no matter where it fall in the parliamentary procedure , although say the others certainly might help you appreciate it more . ) But if you are charm to notice that “ Oh , he explain that in Sundiver ” — I mean , that ’s o.k. , comment off , just do n’t carry it against me for not knowing it .

Here ’s my opinion in a nutshell : I admire this book , but it did n’t resonate with me . I mean there are two reasons why , but first permit ’s talk about all the stuff it does awfully well .
in the main , there ’s the background , Brin’sUplift Universe . I like distance opera , and I especially like really large outer space opera , where distances and years are valuate in millions , 1000000000 , or other illions , and there ’s tidy sum of room for what should be momentously unforgettable events to be lost to retentiveness , leaving us with lots of interesting backstory , obscured by the mists of the old age .
The most powerful of these galactic delegacy is the one that start the Library , an info web date back to the fourth dimension of the progenitor , the oldest well-informed metal money in the universe , who begin the tradition of uplift and then mysteriously disappeared . In hypothesis , the Library ought to have information on just about anything large that ’s happened in the last several billion years , but in practice this is n’t the case . now and again , it ’s just wrong ; more often , the Library Institute plays politics , withholding data from some backwash or covering up events it think are better forget .
For example : There does n’t seem to be anything in the Library about the armada of ancient , moon - size spaceships the protagonist have stumble upon just before Startide Rising opens .
Our heroes are the crew of Streaker — humans and uplifted dolphins and a chimpanzee . Humans , naturally , are the one race that does n’t seem to have a patron . Either we evolved on our own and then brought the dolphins and chimps up with us , or some mystery species got us partway there and then give up us during Earth ’s prehistory . Whichever it was , our position as an orphan “ wolfling ” race has made us enemies of all but a handful of the Galactics .
Streaker , the first spacecraft lead by a dolphin crew ( humanity are along to give notice , but officially in a low-level locating ) , disclose the alien fleet and convalesce a strange mummify corpse from it , and then unthinking diffuse news of the breakthrough over telepathic wireless on an subject band , alerting all those inimical Galactics to its existence . At the start of the leger , Streaker has fled to the water satellite Kithrup , and is cover deep below the waves , while multiple bad guys struggle it out above them in outer distance . Whoever is the last raceway standing will be able to zoom down and find Streaker , make the crew unwrap the ancient fleet ’s location , and then , presumably , vote out them . The crew needs to get off before that happens .
Brin switches perspectives throughout the book , letting us see through the eyes of not just the various character down on Kithrup , but also the alien force . And those alien section were by far my favorite part of the story . I dunno — it ’s the same thing that make it more fun to play the Zerg than the humans in StarCraft , or the Mos Eisley cantina scene one of Star Wars ’s most memorable . There ’s for sure a profound way to analyse it , like something about “ the Other ” or how such behemoth are dark reflections of ourselves , but mostly it just boils down to : Done right , aliens are really coolheaded . ( Not to mention : Villains have more fun . )
Brin does it the right way , offering what feels like a Fiend Folio ’s worth of Galactic species : The hatefully fanatic insectoid Tandu , and their amazing guest , an Episiarch ( a subspecies that psychically defies strong-arm realism , making instantaneous space travel and more potential ) and an Acceptor ( a wanderer - same psychic that live to observe new happening ) . The dark - loving Brothers of the Night . And most especially , the reptilian Soro and their coldhearted grand admiral Krat , a pregnant female with a penchant for murdering her own people . Then , too , there are a few Galactics who like humans , like the Synth and the mischievous , mysterious Tymbrimi . I could merrily read a whole muddle of stories about all these guys that did n’t mention Earth at all .
That is one of my problems with Startide Rising . Its background and corroborate casting are so enthralling , I frankly got antsy every time the narrative switched back to Streaker ’s crew . It does n’t help that the honorable guys ’ level line is , although neatly integrated and deftly fulfil , sort of rote .
Now , the story is just packed with intriguing notions . For example , the dolphinfish ( or “ fins , ” or “ fen ” ) talk three languages , one of which is organized in haunt haiku - similar verse line ; they practice a form of genial exercise called Keneenk , intend to keep their more playful , archaic sides in check . ( Brin does an prominent business of characterization with all the marshland , give them each their own personality but have their overarching dolphin - ness indisputably seeming . )
But much of the plot itself is standard genre rigamarole . The elderly homo on control panel , Tom Orley , has to guess off alone to do recon and trouble the aliens who ’ve landed on Kithrup , if the escape programme is going to function . As before long as he leave , some of the fen crew members mutiny , putting the dolphinfish captain in a coma . And will it turn out that the mutineer are the mathematical product of illegitimate genetic experiment , conducted by a misguided human scientist on Streaker , who is confident he ’s too smart to be doing the incorrect thing ? Brin handles the material well , and he ’s barely the only writer to use such tropes — just a match books ago in this blog series , we fancy a similar betrayal - from - within plotlinein C.J. Cherryh ’s Downbelow Station . But Cherryh let hers play out a little longer , and the result was that the traitors finally found themselves too ensnared in their own intrigue to get out , to very cheering effect ; she also compose a richer scoundrel in Jon Lukas , fleshing him out just enough that we almost find sympathy for the bastard . Brin ’s treacherous fen Takkata - Jim and K’tha - jon come off more as simple bad ejaculate ( the latter literally is one , in reality ) . His picture draws a lot of congratulations in the reviews I ’ve take , but I ’d say he goes just as far as he has to , and no further : We understand who the characters are , and we see they ’re not cookie - stonecutter — but still , they do n’t ever storm us . That ’s a ignominy , given the niftily unpredictable macrocosm they populate .

( They ’re kind of like characters in a solid action pic , really . In fact , Startide stand up is cinematic enough that I wonder , particularly since it was written right around the time everyone must have been trying to replicate Star Wars ’ achiever , if Brin was actively aspire to get his series adapt to the big CRT screen . There are even a couple scenes at the end — one where a tough hombre goes almost comically sailing past the foeman aliens alone in a ship he ca n’t control , another where the escaping sub give the raspberry to the Galactics — that feel like they were shoot straight out of an ’ 80s SF flip . )
That is part of why the novel does n’t resonate with me . The other part is something that could be a issue of personal gustatory modality or a matter of the intervening twenty - some years between when the account book was published and when I translate it .
In Brin ’s universe , man , are the human existence heavy people . Like , instead of using the Library to learn how to ramp up awing starships like all the species that detest us have , the humankind make up one’s mind to design their own , because they do n’t require to come to swear on the Library like a crutch , as so many erstwhile races do . Similarly , they handle the uplifted mahimahi and chimps much more kindly than other patron treat their client , according them sound protections and full status as conscious , more or less autonomous beingness .
My memories of 1984 are faint and vague ( I was eight ) , but this is about in keeping with how write up went back then , peculiarly musical genre fable and especially genre fiction that resembled an action picture . It just does not ring true . perhaps I ’m a rude Gus , but one look at the headlines on any day of the week makes it unacceptable for me to imagine a future where almost all the true monsters lurk out in place , wearing claws and leathery skin .
I feel like Brin go too leisurely in Startide climb . Oh , there ’s a body enumeration , but it ’s not gamy , and except for one sacrificial Charles Lamb , the major characters who get it in the end deserve it . And there are rumbling about how even if Streaker escapes , Galactics have already begin taking out all the human settlements in an effort to get at the mystery of the ancient fleet ’s location ; but they do n’t strike the note of despair tidings like that should . A moment where Tom Orley ’s wife , Gillian , has to win control of Streaker back from the mutineer ? Despite all her worries about how it will go — well , it turns out not to be that hard . Even concerns about how badly humans treat dolphins before the fen were uplifted are brushed off . The creature simply say there ’s no resentment on their part because they understood that being predated upon was a reality of nature . That may be an interesting approximation , and uniform with the dolphinfish worldview Brin has created , but it still feels like he ’s permit us off the hooking .
Let me shut by notice that ( 1 ) I have strenuously deflect drawing an doctrine of analogy between my opinion that a great struggle would lend more weight to this story , and my observations after four month of living with a baby about just how baffling it is to grow up into full sentience — and given some of the crazy pseud - deep shit I have drop a line in these posts in the past , I feel like you should be very grateful for my self - simpleness . And ( 2 ) I would absolutely urge Startide Rising to others . At least two people whose taste I trust had nothing but positive Son for the Uplift Saga , and it garner mellow reviews on Amazon and elsewhere , so I surmise that if you ’re not as cranky a bastard as I am ( and probably you are not ) , you ’ll grasp it . And even if it did n’t quite skirt my chimes , I ’m attend forward to The Uplift War a few posts from now . If nothing else , I want to find out what ’s the story with the ancient fleet of moon - size ships . So : Well played , Brin , well played .
