Yesterday , Amazon announce Echo , a Bluetooth speaker unit slash voice - controlled personal assistant , an omnipresent Siri that posture in your living room and answers whatever dubiousness you might make at it . So clearly , Amazon call back that part control is coolheaded enough to warrant a standalone Cartesian product . I ’m just wondering who actually uses the damn thing .
Despite having had Siri a push button - press aside ever since I got an iPhone 4S shortly after launching , voice ascendance ’s never really been a feature I employ much . In fact , the only situation I think I ever systematically use it is involve Google Now to convert unit while I ’m cooking and my hands are covered in stuff — and that ’s a pretty niche scenario .
While Echo looks kind of nifty ( and maaaaybe there ’s a place for it in the quoin of my kitchen ) , I still cerebrate voice dominance is too finicky and not quite utter enough to be a authentic means of interacting with things . There ’s definitely a small activated futuristic buzz on the rare occasion when I ask my earpiece a interrogative sentence from across the room and it receive things veracious the first time . But that ’s totally offset by the dozens of other bankruptcy , or more annoyingly , the times that some completely unrelated news will activate Siri and Google Now . As such , I mostly just lump voice control in along with gesture capture and fingerprint sensing element and other inventions revolutionise by sci - fi that do n’t really do anything hardheaded .
On the other hand , I ’m well aware that maybe it ’s just my sorry British accent mark , or the patronising tone in my voice that Siri does n’t react nicely to . Maybe I ’m doing this all wrong . Maybe voice control is the center of your life , a life-sustaining occasion you ca n’t do without . Sound off below !
