About midway through Europa Report , you may get yourself hold your breath . partially that ’s because you ’ll be feeling the tension in this psychologically intense story of the first humans to visit Jupiter ’s moon Europa . And partly that ’s because this small indie manages to show you visions of place that are heart - wrenchingly beautiful .
fructify in the approximate future tense , Europa Report imagines what would bechance if one of those secret infinite ventures you get word about so much these years really succeeded . rather of a one - way tripper to Mars , though , this charge is hypothesise to be a round - trip to Jupiter ’s moon Europa , whose ice - covered sea might harbor life . A team of scientists and engineers undertake the multi - year stumble to see if there really are living creatures in one of the solar system ’s only ocean environments ( other than the ones on Earth ) . But of course , nothing go as planned and the ship loses contact with Earth during a solar storm .
Nobody on Earth knows what ’s hap to the charge , until the company that funded it releases hours of unobserved footage that the crew made after link was miss . The motion-picture show Europa Report is contain almost entirely of that footage . So yes , it ’s a found footage moving-picture show , but structured more like a psychological thriller — we are shown bits and piece of footage from after contact is lost , but then we see earlier footage from when the ship launched . It ’s almost as if we ’re screen out through picture files ourselves , trying to make sense of what ’s happened .
Though this narration structure is confusing at first , eventually we settle into a aboveboard story of discovery and loss . Ultimately , it ’s about what happens to this mathematical group of citizenry who know that no matter what they break on Europa , they ’ll never be able-bodied to deal their findings with anyone but each other . They hope that somebody will rule the data point they gather ( and indeed this movie is cogent evidence they have ) , but they ’ll never know for sure . We watch as some characters break under the strain , and others make tragic sacrifice . The cast is superb , with Sharlto Copley , Michael Nyqvist and Anamaria Marinca delivering standout carrying into action .
One of the amazing aspects of this film is how it ’s present . Most of the action is shot in the ship , which is essentially the size of the International Space Station — so there are repositing - lined walls , minimum cots , and a room with a board where most of the action takes topographic point . But outside the windows , we see the unbelievable , dazzling span of the Milky Way and the lento - growing bearing of Jupiter . Director Sebastián Cordero utterly illuminates this contrast between the characters ’ claustrophobic world and the genuinely veneration - inspiring cosmos beyond that keeps them fit .
The representations of Jupiter and Europa in this flick come straightaway from literal artificial satellite imagery collect by NASA , and the journey to Europa itself is both realistic and gorgeous . There ’s a deterrent example here about how dramatic tautness and splendid concept figure , even on an indie budget , can create a sense of curiosity match that of a VFX blockbuster . And the payoff at the oddment is electrifying .
There are a few problem with the picture that may eat at you along the style . As I mentioned earlier , the “ jump around in time ” storytelling style is occasionally puzzling , and may push viewers away at first . And you ’ll just have to suspend your incredulity when our characters say there is absolutely no way to sign to Earth that they ’re still live .
The dewy-eyed fact is that Europa Report , with its realism and operatic expanse , is a rarity among moving-picture show about the experience of going to space . It captures both the soiled , awful realities of live in a can for year and the absolute wonderment of discovery that can propel humans to do almost anything . It ’s a judicious psychological admixture , and when you finally lay eyes on the icy crag that crown the Europan seas , you ’ll be as fuel by Adrenalin as the characters are .
