At its annual developer conference in San Jose today , Facebook unveil some of its latest tech project , assure investors that it ’s catching up to competitorslike Snapchat . Mark Zuckerberg himself took the point to make painful jest about Fast and Furious and speak up on how Facebook wants to overlook what he understand as the next major platform : augment world . Being able to have animated shark swimming around your cereal pipe bowl is apparently the future tense of technical school — according to Zuck , at least .

The company also introduced Facebook Spaces , which is basically just Second Life mix with Facebook and powered by virtual reality headsets . If I spent a workweek reckon a future tense designed to imitate eternal damnation , it still would n’t be as painful as take in Facebook’sawkward proclamation video .

Sure , the technology is cool , I guess , but who actually need something like this ? Would anyone besides people who draw themselves as “ virtual reality partisan ” really want to lash on a bulky , expensive headset so they can have interaction that are both more clumsy and less personal than real lifetime ?
Facebook ’s pitch is basically , “ Why take a picture show with your acquaintance when you’re able to do the same thing but in virtual world with the International Space Station in the background ? ” It appears Facebook Spaces will also admit game , which is believably a far more appealing feature of speech . It ’s a just toy ! This might be fun to try out a few times , but Facebook is selling it as some variety of socialization supplement to replace actual human interaction .
Even on a heavy stage at a flashy developer conference , this stuffcomes across as ludicrous , but in drill it seems like a very lone and , aboveboard , pitiable experience .
