We ’re creeping closer to the one - year mark and HBO Max is still tinkering with its political program .
An update for the app that popped up earlier this workweek state in its App Storerelease notesthat substance abuser will “ discover raw video histrion ascendency that are more aerodynamic and leisurely to habituate in this update . ” In addition to call some unspecified bugs , the update also put forward that HBO Max “ took a look under the hood and made functioning enhancements to improve f number , so you could get to the amusement you want faster . ” On Android , it seems the serving has alsoreintroduceda restart button for in - advancement titles .
That ’s all peachy , of course . But I can think of one matter that would definitely better the service and hopefully assist its algorithm out a fiddling as well : like and dislike clitoris . presently , when you press a title , you may contribute it to your watchlist , which is a helpful manner to organize poppycock you have it off you desire to watch finally but not necessarily decently aside . On mobile , downloads for offline viewing are an appreciated fringe benefit . But unlike Netflix and Hulu , HBO Max lacks the tools to differentiate the servicing which titles you in reality delight and which you do n’t desire to see any more of .

To be totally fairish to HBO Max , this is a feature lose from a great deal of major streaming service . Disney+ and Prime Video both lack it , for good example . But I think for HBO Max in particular , it makes a lot of sense . HBO Max ’s recommendation anddiscovery cock are a mess , and they ’re not exactly help by the number of contravene brands that live together under one roof on the service .
As one instance , I was surprised at how long it hire me to detect Allen v. Farrow on HBO Max the weekend it landed on the service . In theory , it should have been fairly easy for me to find , as the main musical genre I watch on the platform is documentaries . Had I been able to more aggressively flag that information to HBO Max with like and dislike buttons , mayhap its algorithm would start serving me titles that more closely align with my interests . Then again , perhaps not ! But it probably would n’t offend .
Last year around launching , an HBO Max spokesperson said that the site would use both human curation as well as data - drive curation to recommend message . Human curation was apparently very important as the help launched , but the spokesperson separate Gizmodo at the fourth dimension that “ as we progress throughout the twelvemonth and pull in more and more data , we will be able to understand what hoi polloi desire and drive more personalised human curation for each drug user . ”

Maybe the job is n’t so much that HBO Max thinks it know what its case-by-case user want to view as much as it is that HBO Max is n’t reach us the tools to narrate the company ourselves .
