If you ’d wish to make a point about the physics of helium balloons , just sting one in a vacuum .
One of the early physics demonstrations that I ever witnessed was a wide-eyed one explain the motion of a He balloon in Earth ’s atmosphere . It involved a clear plastic bucket full of unpopped popcorn kernels – I think it was an emptied - out cerise vine container – and a ping pong orb . The instructor pushed the ping pong musket ball to the bottom of the container . Then he set forth shaking the container back and away , hold the sum shift . Soon the ping pong ball pop out at the top of the substance .
The Ping River niff ball was less dull than the kernels , so they course poke at it upwards as they settle , with gravitational attraction , towards the bottom of the container . The same thing happen in the atmosphere , when a gasoline like He competes for quad with denser gases .

We naturally remember of atomic number 2 balloon as “ flying , ” or “ hovering ” but they do n’t . They get pushed upwards by the denser air around them . We can see this the moment we off the air . Put a helium balloon in a vacuum and it ca n’t be adrift any more than a sway , or for that matter , a somebody .
Most balloon - in - vacuum experiments concenter on the way balloon expand , due to their interior melodic line imperativeness , as the outer pressure on them diminishes . I wish this one good because it shew that , the moment you take away the air , the helium balloon sinks like a rubber duck after the plug has been take out of a vat . It ’s a squeamish reminder that we ’re not move through “ nothing . ” We ’re move through a sea of melody , and some thing can float to the top of that sea . Remove the sea , and they all come down .
