At the Navy’sbrand , new multi - million dollar LASR complex , researchers are creating problem - solving Siri times a million . It ’ll understand us ! It ’ll be well-disposed ! And it ’ll put out our fires by being just as smart as a human . We trust .

The Laboratory for Autonomous Systems Research is a Naval resort area . But there ’s some serious workplace going on at bottom , like Lucas and Octavia — a robotic brother and sister duo being train to have human intelligence , without the human reluctance to thrust ahead into a fiery fire . Lucas , as find out in the brief exchange above , is using an innovative voice recognition outfit that does n’t just sympathize English sentences — it can frustrate - reference them to make inference , mesmerism , and decisions . In the demo here , Lucas is able to “ remember ” a late conversation , and “ realize ” that a human conclusion does n’t make sense . That point where Lucas looks confused and/or incredibly hung over ? That ’s the problem solving action at work — the golem can tell when we ’re bring in mistakes .

It ’s slow at this level , but the tech is in its infancy . Ideally , the Navy will have the processing run just as dissolute as an actual someone would mouth back to you . Then a robot firefighter like Octavia will be able to not only savvy the complexity of a burning ship / building / blank space station , she ’ll be capable to rush over and put it our , keep humans from harm ’s way . We just need to verify she ’s able to do it at about 100x the stride she can right now — but again , tech infancy .
