How do you make an out-of-door carving look like rain metallic element ? Here ’s how London designer / clothes designer / artist Thomas Heatherwick did it when creating this 100 - foot - gamy sculpture for the Wellcome Trust construction in London :
. Poured molten metal into pee , creating a 2 - inch blob .
. Used a 3 - D face scanner from a nearby infirmary to digitize the blob .

. Created glass beads allot to coordinates assigned by the digital scanner ’s modeling program .
. Hung the beads on 26,732 steel wires held together by bantam metal springs . Image by Gaetan Lee
