Tardigrades ( aka " water bear "   or " moss piglets " ) are uneven small creature at the honest of times . seldom measure more than 1 millimeter in length , they look like a mash - up between a copper and a cat with eight legs and a tubular sass armed with needle - similar teeth called stylets .

But this particular creature takes things a whole step further . capture on camera   by biologist   Rafael Martín - Ledo , it looks as though it has gorged on glister bombs and now resembles one of those sparklywater snake toysfound in many a ' 90s fry ’s political party bag .

Martín - Ledo regain the world ’s most redundant tardigrade relaxing in moss collected from the bank of the River Saja in Cantabria , northern Spain . The television was filmed using an imaging technique call in phase - direct contrast microscopy .   This effectively amps up the brightness set on the mental image , making it well-situated to identify microscopical structure and   turning the contents of the tardigrade ’s stomach into a glittering disco ball .

The   source of   these sparkles is unknown but Martín - Ledo believes they could be fragments of the tardigrade ’s own lip that it has accidentally unsay . Stylets are made from aragonite   – a mineral and naturally forming vitreous silica consisting of carbon and atomic number 20 .

But this is just a hint . The sparkles could instead have occur from bacteria or algae it ate – or something else altogether . For now , and until more research is done , it will remain a mystery .

Tardigrades look foreign but they can be establish just about anywhere on the planet . Size - wise , they can measure anything from   0.05 to 1.2 millimeters and there aremore than 1,000 experience coinage .

Tardigrades have developed an almost furore - like following , partially because of their strangely cute coming into court and part because they are the John McClanes of the beast kingdom . To put it bluntly , they are nearly perdurable .

These microscopical beasts can survive an incredible30 yearswithout food or water by achievinga state of suspend animation . They can survive in some of the planet ’s harshest consideration ( see : Antarctica ’s undercover lakes ) and thevacuum of outer space . They can withstandhigh doses of radiation , uttermost pressure , and boiling urine , not to mentiontemperaturesas low as   -200 ° C ( -328 ° F ) and as high as 150 ° C ( 302 ° degree Fahrenheit ) or more .

Basically , when the apocalypse comes ( whether byclimate changeornuclear war ) , tardigrades will outlive us all . Indeed , expert reckon these little creatures will carry on survivinguntil the Sun eventually diesroughly 10 billion years in the future .
